WINDOWS 95

5-1 What is the current version of HawkEye for Windows 95? How do I download and install this version?

To access the latest drivers for your card please go to the Motion 771 Driver area.

Preparation for Download

Create a Temporary directory off of the C:\ directory. (assuming that C:\ is the name of the hard drive).

Please name the directory something neutral, for example C:\TEMP or C:\NEW.

Download

Locate the file for Windows 95 listed in the Driver Update section of the Web Site. Download that file into the temporary directory which you created. (You can locate the file name on the BBS and FTP by going into library for your Number Nine Product or by searching for the file in the General Library on CompuServe).

Once the file has been downloaded into the temporary directory, open Windows Explorer or Windows File Manager. Locate the Folder where the file has been downloaded and click on that folder so that one may view the contents.

Expansion of Downloaded File

The downloaded file should be the only file listed in the temporary folder (C:\TEMP or C:\NEW). Double click on the downloaded file. At this point one of two things will happen either a WinZip Window will appear, or the files will be shown expanding in to a directory.

IF THE WINZIP WINDOW APPEARS:

If the Winzip Window pops up, change the line which reads C:\WINDOWS\TEMP (or variation of that) to C:\TEMP or C:\NEW directory. Then click UNZIP in the WinZip window, the files will then expand to the C:\TEMP or C:\NEW directory.

After the files have successfully extracted to the diskette, you may close the WinZip window and Windows File Manager or Windows Explorer.

5-6 How do I check to see what version of HawkEye for Windows I currently have installed in my system?

The version which is relevant to users of HawkEye is the Disk Version (not the Driver Version), this is the number which will indicate the version of HawkEye you have installed on your system. Simply click on the Number Nine ICON and click on the STATUS option. Here is where you will find the Disk Version listed.

5-7 I used Monitor Adjustment and inadvertently set my Refresh Rate too high for my monitor to handle, how do I set it back to normal?

You can Run "9RESET" to reconfigure the Motion 531 and set you back to 640x480 at 256 Colors. In order to run 9RESET you will need to do the following:
Reboot your computer to return to the DOS prompt
Change directories to the C:\WINDOWS directory
Type 9RESET and press the ENTER key
Restart Windows.

5-8 Icons in Program Manager are black, and I am receiving a message which says "Extremely Low on Memory", what do I do?

Program Manager reserves only 64 KB of memory for each ICON GROUP. When you use a true color (32 bit) mode, each icon requires four times more memory than an icon in 256-color mode. If Program Manager runs out of memory, it paints some icons black and displays an error message. Unfortunately, choosing "file properties" as the message instructs you to do, does not solve the problem. Until Program Manager is modified by Microsoft to eliminate this limitation, use the following table as a guideline for your icon groups:

COLOR

MODE

MAXIMUM ICON PER GROUP

32 bit/16.8 M

16

16 bit/65K

32

8 bit/256K

5-9 I am using NORTON DESKTOP and my icons are corrupt, how do I fix this?

The reason that this has happened is because your ICOCACHE.DAT file was not updated by Norton when you switched resolutions. It is very easy to rectify this situation:
1.) From Norton's OPTIONS menu select CUSTOMIZE.
2.) Choose the QUICK-ACCESS-ICON.
3.) Click on the ADVANCED box.
4.) Click on the RESET ICONS box.

5-11 Where are the drivers released first? BBS, FTP, or WWW?

The drivers are generally released to each of these places simultaneously. There are drivers available on CompuServe as well (GO NINE), however there is a 48hour delay when uploading due to scanning requirements by CompuServe

U.S. BBS 617-862-7502
Europe BBS 49 89 61 44 91 66
FTP site ftp.nine-j.co.jp

5-12 How can I determine whether the Video Drivers are really the issue if I am experiencing a problem in a program?

The most effective way of determining whether you are experiencing a hardware problem or a software (Number Nine driver) problem is to change the currently installed driver to VGA. If the problem does not occur in VGA, then you are most likely in need of a Number Nine driver update, however, if the problem still occurs when the VGA driver is being used, then the problem is not related to the Number Nine video driver, and may be due to a hardware problem or different driver (such as a printer driver).

If you are using Windows 95, you can also use the Graphic Accelerator bar to determine whether the issue you are experiencing is related to the Video Driver. To locate the Graphic Accelerator, simply do the following steps:

  • Click on START
  • Click on SETTINGS
  • Click on CONTROL PANEL
  • Click on SYSTEM
  • Click on the PERFORMANCE tab
  • Click on the button labeled "GRAPHICS…"
  • Here you will find the Advanced Graphics Settings window.
Move the slide bar down one notch and then click on OK. Then click on Close. Restart if prompted to do so.
When you restart, initiate the sequence of events that indicates the problem you are experiencing. If the problem no longer occurs, then it is most likely a video driver problem. IF the problem still occurs follow these procedures again until you get to the last setting of the slider bar. IF the problem still occurs at the last setting, then you are most likely NOT experiencing a video driver problem.

5-13 How do I set to VGA?

5-16 What are the limitations of the VGA Passthrough connector on the Number Nine graphic Accelerator? Can I use my TV Tuner or MPEG card?

The VGA pass-through connector allows for the resolution 640x480 at 16 colors or VGA. That is the only resolution that will come across the connector. Although it is possible to use a TV Tuner or MPEG card, the ONLY resolution that will function will be 640x480, 16 colors (VGA).

The best possible TV Tuner or MPEG card that one could use with the Number Nine graphic accelerator is one that makes use of PCI BUS Mastering. This type of TV Tuner or MPEG card does not require the use of the Video Graphic Accelerator’s Feature Connector, and therefore you would be able to get more than 640x480 at 16 colors. Contact the TV Tuner or MPEG card manufacturer to find out if they carry a product that makes use of this technology.

5-17 What is MPEG?

MPEG (Moving Pictures Experts Group) is a video syntax that provides an efficient way to represent image sequences in the form of more compact coded data. The specific video syntax which Number Nine currently supports is MPEG phase I, or more commonly called MPEG-I. It defines a bit stream for compressed video and audio optimized to fit into a bandwidth (data rate) of 1.5 Mbits/s with parameters of 352 pixels by 240 lines by 30 frames per second. MPEG-I is primarily used in the PC market for video-clip playback and for games by providing VHS-like video on any machine equipped with an MPEG decoder and compatible CD drive. The algorithm is based on two key techniques—temporal and spatial compression. Temporal compression relies on similarities between successive pictures using precondition and motion compensation. Spatial compression relies on redundancy within small areas of a picture and is based on the discrete-cosine transform (DCT), quantization, and entropy-coding techniques.

Support for MPEG can be accomplished through both hardware and software. Hardware support is in the form of a PC card with an onboard MPEG decoder. This MPEG card can either be a stand-alone card, or be attached to a graphics/video card via a feature connector or the video output. Software support is in the form of a driver which will aid the decoding/decompression of MPEG videos by sending some of the work to the processor on the graphics/video card (only with specific multimedia controllers).

5-18 Does this card have any MPEG capabilities?

This card can handle the YUV to RGB conversion via the Graphic Pixolator which is built into the S3 968 graphics processor chip. However, you will need Software MPEG drivers in order to run MPEG files.

5-19 I would like to obtain MPEG drivers for my Number Nine Graphic Accelerator, how do I do that?

Number Nine is pleased to announce that we are making the popular MPEG playback software widely available to our customers.

5-20 I have video that is built on to my motherboard, what should I do?

It is not unusual to have a motherboard installed in your system that already has Video Capabilities built on to it. If you find that you have one of these types of motherboards, then you will need to consult the Motherboard Documentation in order to DISABLE the on board video.

This may require a jumper setting on the motherboard, or you may need only to insert the graphic card into the slot and the motherboard will automatically "turn off" the on board video, or you may need to obtain a motherboard system BIOS update (Contact the motherboard manufacturer or company which put the system together for such an update).

5-21 What is BIOS shadowing and should it be enabled or disabled?

In General, BIOS chips are slow, so in order for a fast boot, BIOS’s can be copied to SYSTEM RAM via BIOS shadowing in order to allow for faster access and therefore, faster boot up. This will not really affect the Video Board, therefore it is totally up to the individual user whether they want to leave BIOS shadowing to the default setting or change it.

5-22 My computer seemed to boot up OK, but there is no display, what should I do?

Please check the following items:
Make sure that the Video Accelerator edge is firmly inserted in the slot on the motherboard. (no Gold teeth should be showing.)
Make sure that the power cables are securely attached to computer and monitor
Make sure that the monitor cable is attached securely at both ends.
Make sure that the Motion 531 is the ONLY graphic board in the system. If there is another graphics board, turn off your computer and disable or remove the other graphic board according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Make sure that you have made necessary adjustments to Switches and Jumper Settings on the Motherboard, if necessary.
(Consult you Motherboard documentation to determine whether you are going to have to set any jumpers or switches.)

5-23 What is the syntax to do a "memory exclusion" in my Config.sys file and in my System.ini file?

A Memory Exclusion statement may be needed in order to get your programs to run properly: Please exclude the range A000-C7FF in your memory manager, if your memory manager has a "stealth mode", please disable that as well. The exclusion statement should look something like this…
In the CONFIG.SYS file:

DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS X=A000-C7FF

In the SYSTEM.INI file:

[386Enh]

EMMEXCLUDE=A000-C7FF
